How to Charge Publicly with CURRENT

A guide explaining how to charge with CURRENT at publicly available charging stations.

With CURRENT as the operator of public charging stations, you have several ways to charge your EV in compliance with AFIR. All charging stations are labeled with stickers showing how to start charging using a QR code, SMS, and other options, without requiring you to be a registered user. 

CURRENT Charge: Although public charging stations do not require you to use the mobile app or register an account, the app provides the best overview of your charging sessions and charging history. You can also easily find charging stations on the map or search for them directly. In addition, the app includes a built-in QR scanner that allows you to scan the sticker on a charging station and be taken directly to the correct charging point.

CURRENT Charge is available in both the App Store (iPhone) and Google Play (Android).

RFID (charging card / charging tag): Charging cards and charging tags can be used, but they must be registered to an account in CURRENT Charge. Alternatively, they may work with permission from the site owner if roaming is enabled (more about roaming below).

You can register a charging card or charging tag yourself in the mobile app under Settings. Please note that you must be standing next to a charging point and hold the charging card against the reader when registering it.

Roaming: Roaming is a feature enabled by the location owner in CURRENT that allows the charging facility to be used through third-party providers. These third-party networks consist of more than 100 charging services.

If roaming is enabled, you can charge using services such as:

  • EasyPark
  • Norwegian EV Association
  • Elton
  • Ayvens
  • and many more

All charging transactions are then handled through the third-party service you choose to use, and you do not need to interact with CURRENT.

SMS: When visiting a public charging station, you will see that each charging point has a sticker with a unique QR code and SMS code.

If you would like to charge via SMS, send a text message to 2210 with the text: LADE xxxx (charging point code - norwegian sticker).

You will receive a text message when the charging session starts, containing all necessary information, including how to stop the charging session.

Note: If your SIM card is provided by your employer, SMS payment services may be blocked. In that case, SMS charging is not recommended.

QR Code: When visiting a public charging station, you will see that each charging point has a sticker with a unique QR code and SMS code.

If you would like to charge using a QR code, scan the code with your phone's camera. You will then be redirected to CURRENT's web interface, where you can pay for charging using methods such as Vipps.

You can stop the charging session and access your receipt through the same interface.

Payment Terminal: In some cases, especially at fast-charging stations, you will find one or more payment terminals. Using the payment terminal, you can select the charging connector you wish to use and pay with your bank card.
